IKEA vs Howdens Kitchen Units: A Designer’s Perspective

When planning a new kitchen, one of the earliest (and most important) decisions is what sits behind the doors: the units themselves. Two of the most common options we’re asked to compare are IKEA and Howdens.

Both can work well — but from a design, proportion and usability perspective, I consistently lean towards IKEA. Here’s why.

1. Proportions Matter: Plinth Height & Storage

One of the biggest (and often overlooked) differences between IKEA and Howdens is plinth height.

  • IKEA plinths: approx. 80mm

  • Howdens plinths: approx. 170mm

That extra plinth height with Howdens means the actual cabinet is shorter.

What does that mean in real terms?

  • IKEA base units are 800mm tall

  • Howdens base units are typically 720mm tall

That’s 80mm more usable storage inside every base unit with IKEA.

From a design perspective, the lower plinth also:

  • Creates a sleeker, more contemporary look

  • Makes kitchens feel less boxy

  • Improves overall proportions, especially in smaller or modern spaces

For clients who want calm, considered, design-led kitchens — this detail makes a real difference.

2. A Cleaner Internal Look

IKEA’s black cabinet system is something I genuinely love.

The interiors feel:

  • Smart

  • Consistent

  • Visually tidy

By contrast, many trade units use wood-effect carcasses. When paired with real wood or high-quality fronts, that fake timber interior can actually cheapen the overall look.

You may never show the inside of your cupboards — but you’ll open them every day.

A neutral, clean internal cabinet lets the fronts and materials shine, rather than competing with them.

3. Better Pairing with Custom & Solid Wood Fronts

At KindRoot, we often work with:

  • Solid wood

  • Veneered plywood

  • Sculpted or shaped fronts

IKEA’s simple, modern cabinet system works beautifully as a quiet backdrop to more expressive, natural materials.

A high-quality front on a fake wood carcass can feel visually “off” — even if you can’t quite put your finger on why. IKEA avoids that clash entirely.

4. Design Flexibility & Predictability

IKEA units offer:

  • Consistent sizing

  • Reliable lead times

  • Easy replacement or future changes

  • Compatibility with bespoke, handmade or aftermarket fronts

This makes them ideal for:

  • Phased renovations

  • Budget-conscious but design-led projects

  • Clients who want flexibility without compromise

So… Is Howdens Bad?

Not at all.

Howdens can be a solid option for:

  • Speed-driven projects

  • Trade-led installs

  • Traditional layouts

But if your priorities are:

  • Proportion

  • Storage efficiency

  • Clean internal aesthetics

  • Pairing with beautiful, natural materials

Then IKEA is often the stronger foundation.

Our Approach at KindRoot

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all kitchens.

But we do believe in:

  • Starting with the best structure

  • Designing from real life use

  • Choosing systems that support calm, longevity and flexibility

For many of our projects, IKEA provides exactly that — and allows us to focus on what truly makes a kitchen special: layout, flow, material choice and thoughtful details.

If you’re unsure which route is right for your home, our design service is there to help you weigh it up properly — before committing to anything.
